Maria Theresa Square

Maria Theresia Square is a public square with a memorial complex in the historic center of the city Uzhgorod, located next to the Uzhhorod Cathedral, was created in honor of the empress Maria Theresa. The square was built on the initiative of Alen Panov and Mukachivska Greek Catholic Church diocese[1][2]. During the construction of the Maria Theresa Square, the 200-year-old stone one was destroyed mur[3][4], which was accompanied by significant public resonance[5] and a negative assessment by specialists


Establishment of the park In 2004, Uzhhorod diplomat and lawyer Alen Panov together with the Greek Catholic bishop Milan Shashik of Mukachevo initiated the creation of the Maria Theresa Square[1]. In 2013, Panov et Bishop Milan announced a competition for the development of the square project[2]. The conditions of the competition provided for unification of separate plots that belonged to Alen Panov and were at his disposal of the Greek Catholic diocese[1], into a single space with a square and the construction of a memorial complex in the buffer zone of the architectural monument of national importance — the Uzhhorod Cathedral cathedral [2]. Part of the square, with the monument to Maria Theresa and the memorial complex belonging to Alain Sir, was opened for public use on January 5, 2015, and the other part, with a statue of the Virgin Mary belonging to the Greek Catholic Diocese - June 28, 2016 year According to the founders of the square, its construction is intended to serve the achievement of two goals: Arrangement of the territory, which will provide a panoramic view of the Cathedral Immortalization of Maria Theresa and other historical figures who made the greatest contribution to development Castle Quarter[15] The square is named after the empress of the Holy Roman Empire, the queen of Hungary and Archduchess of Austria Maria Theresa of Habsburg-Lorraine (1717-1780). It is the period of her reign became one of the most significant in the formation of the city. In those days, Uzhhorod turned into regional center. It was here that the capital of the newly formed Greek Catholic diocese was located, which united several contemporary committees of historical Transcarpathia. Monument to Maria Theresa (sculptor - Bohdan Tomashevskyi) is the central figure of the square. The Uzhhorod Castle acquired its modern appearance precisely during the reign of this family. Miklos Bercheny (1665—1725) was a count, one of the most famous owners of the Uzhhorod Castle, who turned the city into an important political and cultural center of Central Europe. Andriy Bachynskyi (1732—1809) was the first full-fledged Greek Catholic bishop, under whom Uzhhorod became the center of the diocese. His activities laid the foundation for the powerful development of the city, as until Uzhgorod Castle and the entire Castle Quarter were handed over to the diocese.
